The KreativeLab team, led by Dr. Leung Chi-hin, Chief Advisor of KreativeLab and Assistant Professor at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), proudly received the Gold Award in the Hong Kong Open Group under the Digital Economy category at the Hong Kong Techathon+ 2024. The winning project, “Project e-MUSE,” was honored with an initial funding of HK$10,000 from the event organizers.

The innovative “Project e-MUSE” leverages Dr. Leung’s patented Grid Notation to create a groundbreaking iPadOS AI-enabled application. This tool allows music learners to manipulate music parameters such as pitch, rhythm, dynamics, and articulation using built-in Grid Notation scores. Supported by specialized interfaces including Expression Grid, SmartKey, HexKey, and SmartChord, the application lowers the learning barriers compared to traditional five-line staff notation, making music education more accessible to beginners.

“Receiving this award is a testament to our commitment to transforming music education through AI technology,” Dr. Leung remarked. “Project e-MUSE offers personalized, cost-effective learning solutions, empowering students to explore music with ease and enthusiasm, ultimately advancing the city’s music education landscape.”

Co-organized by 10 local universities and Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks (HKSTP), the Hong Kong Techathon+ 2024 marked its eighth edition, attracting 1,500 participants from 92 startup teams, including student teams from universities in Macao, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and the United States.

The three-day final competition, held in January 2024, featured three groups—Hong Kong Student, Hong Kong Open, and International—across four technology themes: Trusted AI & Data Science, Sustainability & ESG, Digital Economy, and Smart Cities.

In addition to the Gold Award, the “Project e-MUSE” team secured direct admission to the HKSTP Ideation Programme, along with entrepreneurial support and seed funding to further develop the innovation.

KreativeLab remains dedicated to enhancing music education and looks forward to future collaborations to bring more cutting-edge solutions to students, enabling the next generation to explore the world of music with greater ease and enthusiasm.
